CHEYENNE – While several primary election races were close, Wyoming’s secretary of state said today that no recounts appear necessary.
State law requires a recount when the number of votes between the winning and losing candidate is less than 1 percent of the votes cast for the winning candidate.
Secretary of State, Max Maxfield said none of the unofficial results submitted by county clerks appear to trigger an automatic recount.
Maxfield said in a press release that people have asked about the tight Republican gubernatorial race.
Unofficial results show Matt Mead with 30,272 votes and Rita Meyer with 29,558 votes. “The 1 per cent rule, if applied to that race, would mean that the threshold for a recount would be 303 votes (1% of 30,272). If the distance between the two candidates was 303 votes or even closer then a recount would have been called for. In this case, since the 714 vote margin is greater than the threshold of 303, no recount is required,” Maxfield said in the release.
There was also a close race for State Auditor on the Republican ticket between Cynthia Cloud and Bruce Brown. That race was also not within the 1 percent recount margin.
In House District 6, only 12 votes separate Richard L. Canady and Richard C. Grant Jr. Based on the unofficial results, there would need to be 11 or fewer votes separating the candidates to trigger a recount.
“If anything changes between the unofficial and the official results, we could see a recount in that district,” Maxfield said. “We’ll wait to see the results of the Converse County Canvassing Board which we’ll have by Friday.”
